Monday, May 4, 2020 Announcements and Assignments

Monday, 5/4/20

Announcements

1. I learned today that some of you had trouble joining the meeting from the Burlington English website calendar. I'll check and see what the problem is. Meanwhile, remember that you can also join this way:
  1.   Go to the Zoom.com website
  2.   Click "Join a meeting"
  3.   Click "Open Zoom" if you are prompted to do so
  4.   Enter the meeting ID and click "Continue" (or whatever that button says)
  5.   Enter the meeting password
2. We have our last classes this week and next week (each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00 a.m.). The last day of class for the spring semester is Friday, May 15th. We will continue to work in Unit 9 ("On the Job") of the FER3 textbook and workbook this week, as well as in Burlington English (see assignments below).

3. After unit 9, there are still two units in the textbook that we have not covered. Unit 10 is called "Going to the Doctor," and unit 11 is called "Money Matters." Obviously we will not have time to cover both of these units. I would like you to vote on which unit you prefer to cover, in our last three classes next week.

Please look at the "Scope and Sequence" section at the front of your textbook, on pp. x and xi. Look over the columns that tell what units 10 and 11 cover (grammar, life skills, reading, etc.). Then send me a text or email by Friday, May 8th, to let me know which unit you vote for.

Assignments for Monday, May 4, 2020
(due Wednesday, May 6th)

NOTE: I will post the answers to homework assigned Friday, May 1st (see the previous post), on Tuesday, May 6th. /So if you missed class today (5/4/20), you can check your work there.

1. FER3 Textbook, pp. 172-173

Please skim and then read "Working the Late Shift" on p. 172.
Then do exercises 3A, 3B, and 4 on p. 173.

2. FER3 Workbook, p. 100

Do exercises A, B, and C on p. 100.

Do not send me the two assignments above--we will go over them in class on Wednesday, May 6th, at 10 a.m.

3. Burlington English Readers

One of your assignments from last Friday, May 1st, was to choose one of the stories in the BE Readers section and read it over the weekend. Please do so if you have not yet read a story. Be sure to choose a story you find interesting, not one that bores you!

Then write four sentences about the story you chose. These sentences should tell me what story you read and what you liked or didn't like about the story. Send your sentences to me (by text or email. by Friday, May 8th.

UPDATE: The due date for this assignment has changed, to give you a little more time. Please send me your sentences by Monday, 5/11/20.

4. Burlington English Core--Lower Intermediate

This is the same course we've been working on. In section 4, lesson 6, there is a section on indefinite pronouns that will give you more practice. This is the grammar term for words such as one, ones, which one, this, that, these, and those (as shown in the FER3 Textbook, pp. 170-171, which was part of Friday's homework assignment).Like the personal pronouns (I, you, he, she, we, him, her, etc.), indefinite pronouns can take the place of a noun.

Please complete Lesson 4, "Money Matters," section 6 (Grammar: Indefinite Pronouns), by Wednesday, May 6th. There are 8 parts to this section, but each one is short and won't take you very long.

Friday, May 1, 2020 Announcements and Assignments

Friday, 5/1/20

Announcements

1) On Burlington English, I have now given registered students access to all four levels of the Burlington Core courses. If you find the Low Intermediate too difficult or if you want to go back and review the lower level lessons, you now have access to them.

2) For instance, you can review comparative and superlative adjectives in the High Beginners level, Lesson 4: Money Matters.

Assignments

1) Future English 3 Workbook, pp. 98-99, Ex. A, B, C, and D

We did p. 98, Ex. A and B, in class on Friday (today, 5/1/20), so please do this exercise on your own if you were not in the zoom meeting today. We will go over this work in class on Monday.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEND ME THIS ASSIGNMENT.

2) Future English 3 Textbook, p. 170-171

Read and study the Grammar section at the top of the page on using one or ones in place of nouns. Be sure to read the "Grammar Watch" box for specific point.

HOMEWORK: Do Ex. A and B on p. 170, and do Ex. A and B on p. 171.
Please send me your answers to these exercises by text or email.

3) Burlington English

Please continue to work in BE at your own pace. If you like, you may select a different level of the CORE course to work in (see the announcements above).

For the weekend, please go into the READERS section of the BE menu. Choose a story and read it over the weekend. There are three different reading levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced), and you may choose a story from any level. I will be able to check BE and see what you read, so that counts the same as sending me the assignment!

Next week, I will ask you to answer a few questions about the story you read, so expect to see those questions on Monday.

A copy of the answers to the test is also posted on this blog for you to check, under the "Homework Answers" heading.

2. The answers to Tuesday's homework from Unit 8 (FER3 Textbook, p. 159 and Workbook, p. 90) are also now posted under the "Homework Answers" heading. Please check your own answers, and let me know if you have any questions. We have done all we are going to do on Unit 8 at this point.

3. Today in the Zoom meeting we started on Unit 9, "On the Job" in the textbook.

Assignments due Friday, May 1, 2020

Future English 3 Textbook: Unit 9--"On the Job"

1. Please read pp. 165-167 and make sure you understand the nine phrases under "Job Skills." Try to match these phrases with one of the numbered pictures on pp. 166-167. You may come up with different answers. We will discuss the phrases and pictures in Friday's Zoom meeting.

2. On p. 168 there is a listening exercise. Since we can't listen to the conversation between Margo and Joseph on CD (as we normally do in class) please turn to p. 304 in the back of the textbook and read the dialogue for p. 168, Ex. A and B. Then answer the True/False questions in Ex. B on p. 168.

3. Also on p. 168, please study the four vocabulary terms in the yellow box (inventory, quantity, supplies, and vendor). We will discuss these terms in Friday's 10 a.m. Zoom meeting.

You do not have to send me your answers to the above homework. We will go over the answers in our online Zoom class on Friday morning at 10 a.m.

Here is the Unit 12 end of unit test!

Tuesday, April 21, 2020

Remember, we have an online Zoom meeting tomorrow (Wednesday, 4/22/20) at 10:00 a.m. Use the same link and meeting information I already texted you. If you have problems connecting tomorrow, please call or text me at 309-948-9615. We will discuss Monday’s homework assignment from Unit 8, Staying Healthy, and also the Burlington English assignment on gerunds. See the post from yesterday (Monday, 4/20/20) for instructions, if you haven’t done this work yet.

Unit 12 Test Instructions

  • Use a piece of notebook paper to make an answer sheet.
  • Put your name in the upper right corner of the answer sheet.
  • Put the title Unit 12 Test on the top line, and number the paper 7 to 33* (see an example below).
  • Print the letter of the correct answer  (A, B, C, or D) beside each number. Write clearly.
  • Send me your answers by next Monday, 4/27/20. You can send a picture of your completed answer sheet by text or email, or you can copy your answers into an email (not a text) and send them to me.
* I left out questions 1 to 6 because they required listening to recorded conversations, which is hard to do in this situation.

This test has seven pages, but each page has only a few questions. You may use your textbook to help you as you answer the questions. Below is a guide to what each page of the test covers. I have listed pages in the textbook that cover the same material, to help you as you take the test.
