Unit 8: Staying Healthy (textbook)

Lesson 4, p. 152--Read a nutritional label (Practice 2)

NOTE: I have corrected the subject-verb agreement in sentences 2, 3, 4, and 5 below. The textbook uses a singular verb with the subjects "Fiesta chips" and "Fritter chips." The authors evidently decided to think of a bag of chips as one unit. I disagree with this decision. "Chips" is clearly a plural noun and should have a plural verb.

1.  There are 3 servings in Fiesta Chips and 4 servings in Fritter chips.
2.  Fiesta chips have 160 calories per serving. Fritter chips have 130 calories per serving.
3.  Fiesta chips have 30 more calories than Fritter chips.
4. Fiesta chips contain more fat than Fritter chips.
5. Fiesta chips contain more sodium than Fritter chips.

 Lesson 6, p. 156--Talk about family health

Practice 1
Lu Yi is sixty-five years old and lives in Cleveland, Ohio. His doctor told him to exercise. Lu Yi doesn't like exercising too much, but he does like Tai Chi. He used to do it outdoors in China. The problem is Cleveland is too cold in the winter to do Tai Chi outside. Then Lu Yi learned that the Senior Center near his home has a free Tai Chi class. He goes twice a week and enjoys exercising all winter.

Practice 2

NOTE: More than one verb could be used for some of the blanks, but the answers below use each verb once.

1. For exercise, try practicing martial arts or dancing.
2. When you eat dinner, try giving your children whole grains.
3. At the supermarket, avoid buying white bread and potato chips.
4. When you prepare meals, think about cooking more fish and lean meat.
5. Spend time exercising outside with your children.
6. Stop watching TV and do other activities instead.
